Job Description

The Insurance Collector is responsible for all Medical Billing and Collections, balances must be collected in a timely and efficient manner. Will also answer patient questions regarding their bills.

  • Answers incoming phone calls
  • Makes calls on accounts with overdue patient balances
  • Responds to patient inquires in a timely manner
  • Sends patient statements and collection letters
  • Sets up payment plans and follow up on them
  • Work with other collectors pertaining to insurance problems
  • Follow up on return mail for incorrect addresses 
  • Assigns accounts to collection agency as necessary
  • Correct, appeal and resubmit denied claims or charges
  • Audit patient accounts for proper billing and status
  • Verify, update/edit and approve charges for billing
  • Responsible for keeping self-pay accounts receivable under 10% at 120 days
  • Follows collection policies and procedures
  • Maintain notes in patient accounts for all actions taken
  • Review AHCCCS website for patient eligibility
  • Works as a team member within the business office
  • Attends in-service training and education sessions, as assigned
  • Performs specific work duties and responsibilities assigned by supervisor



Skills / Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • One or more years insurance or self-pay claims processing in a medical setting
  • Knowledge of Medicare, AHCCCS and Commercial Insurances
  • ICD 10, CPT Coding, and Medical Terminology helpful
  • Computer literate with Windows Basics, experience with EHR and Electronic billing practices
  • Professional Appearance and Conduct
