Job Description

The Circulating Registered Nurse (Circulator) will have an excellent working knowledge of all monitoring equipment used in the pre-op area in order to assist in the transport of the patient to the O.R. and reconnect monitors when necessary. They must also have a working knowledge of all equipment used in the O.R., emergency equipment, and the cleaning and maintenance of surgical instruments. The Circulator must be familiar with and utilize acceptable sterile and aseptic technique. Must be familiar with various types of implants as well as the recording and proper documentation of implants.

Essential Job Duties

  • Prepares O.R for the day's surgical schedule including:

                     A. Checking availability of necessary supplies

                     B. Checking all equipment to assure proper functioning (i.e., operative stretchers, defibrillator, and video equipment)

                     C. Make sure adequate supplies are available

                     D. Regulate room temperature

                     E. Oversee all scrub technician duties including:

                                                         i. Check autoclaves for proper functioning and appropriate documentation in log

                                                        ii. Sterility and readiness of surgical instrumentation

                                                       iii. Monitor sterile technique of personnel

                                                       iv. Prepares medication necessary for surgical procedure

  • Check patient's surgical chart for completeness in pre-op area prior to transferring patient to O.R. (resolve all inconsistencies and/or omissions). Ensure all consents are signed
  • Safely transfer patient to O.R. and connect appropriate monitors and O²
  • Position patient on O.R. table at proper height for Surgeon and to Surgeon's specifications
  • Conduct a "TIME OUT" procedure prior to start of procedure. Time out includes:

                   A. Patient Name
                   B. DOB
                   C. Allergies
                   D. Verifying the surgery and site of surgery to be performed with the surgeon

  • Uses sterile technique during prep of the operative site with specified cleaning solution
  • Assist Surgeon and Surgical Technician to gown
  • Assist Surgical Technician with instrumentation set-up and other equipment necessary for use during the upcoming procedure. Assist in recording any special procedures on videotape/pictures as instructed by Surgeon
  • During the surgery, the Circulator will observe for proper functioning of all equipment and surgical assistants, breaks in sterile technique, and signs of discomfort in the patient. Further duties include completion of O.R. records, obtain sterile supplies for Surgical Technician as needed, to assist the Anesthesia Provider as required, and to verify appropriate size of implants, announcing such before implantation
  • The Circulator will verify all medications and expiration dates with the surgical technician that he/she has on the back table and at the operative field. Assure all medications are labeled appropriately
  • After surgery, the Circulator will assist in undraping the patient. Additionally, the Circulator carries out post-op orders, elicits assistance in raising head of bed when necessary, safely transports the patient to the post-op area, and gives necessary report to the Post-op Registered Nurse
  • Circulator will then assist the Surgical Technician with the cleaning and sterilization of surgical instrumentation, preparing for subsequent cases, managing the video equipment
  • The Circulator will assist the Surgical Technician and surgical support tech with cleaning of equipment used during surgery with proper disinfectant, removal of all trash and disposable items, and proper disposal of bio hazardous waste according to set guidelines (see Infection Control and OSHA Manual). In addition, the Circulator will assist other staff to store all equipment properly and neatly, assure all O² is off at the flow meters, turn off all electrical equipment, assist with surgical log recording, and stocking the O.R. for next day's cases
  • Ensure that any specimen to be sent to pathology has been taken care of appropriately
  • Complete an inventory for the next day of all items needed for each case to ensure all items are present
  • Assists in keeping policy/procedure manual current and updated and with any other duties requested by Manager of Surgical Services


  • Must have a current Arizona Registered Nursing License
  • O.R. experience required
  • Must be ACLS and BLS certified

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefer recent O. R experience

Physical Requirements/Working conditions

Frequent standing, stooping, bending, stretching, squatting; must be able to stand/walk for up to 70% of the work day; must be able to lift , transfer, turn and position residents weighing up to 125 lbs. unassisted, or with the assistance of one for a resident weighing over 125 lbs. May be subjected to offensive odors and combative behavior.  Must be able to lift and carry up to 20 lbs. frequently and 50 lbs. occasionally.  May be exposed to communicable diseases including the HIV and HBV viruses.  Must be able to work paying close attention to detail with frequent interruptions.
