General Description 

The Patient Access Team Lead is responsible for monitoring the day to day activity in assigned patient access area and oversees patient flow.  Ensures exceptional customer service is provided to patients, visitors, and fellow employees.  Assists with registration, scheduling, authorization, and referrals in designated area.  Performs all duties and responsibilities in such a way to demonstrate and support the organization’s mission and vision. 

Essential Job Duties 

  • Oversees patient access staff in conjunction with the Patient Access Supervisor, to ensure patients are greeted in a warm and friendly manner, excellent customer service is provided to all patients in designated area and maintain a smooth patient flow.
  • Provides direct supervision and coaching to all patient access staff in designated area as well as providing ongoing feedback related to staff performance
  • Assists in all patient access duties within the designated area as needed to include answering phones, registration, appointment scheduling, benefit verification, patient referrals and authorizations
  • Cross trains in all roles in designated area.
  • Maintains a 95% or higher registration accuracy as well as collects on 85% of accounts with patient liability.
  • Assist Patient Access Supervisor with quality assurance checks to ensures complete and accurate registrations are completed to include patient identity verification, scanning of insurance cards and patient ID’s are current, verification of insurance is completed and reviewed, all required paperwork is signed & scanned into patient charts, patient balances are collected, and reports all deficiencies, concerns, and praises to the Patient Access Supervisor.
  • Assists Patient Access Supervisor in staff training
  • Ensures HIPAA & EMTALA guidelines are being followed
  • Provides exemplary customer service and handles service recovery for any patient issues in absence of Patient Access Supervisor and ensures patient complaints are handled in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Attends meetings as a representative of the department in absence of the Patient Access Supervisor.
  • Assists with Daily deposit, completing of point of service collections report and leads efforts to reach point of service collection goals
  • Encourages a team-oriented environment
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding human resource related issues
  • Rotates in on call schedule to cover absences or after-hours assistance to all areas of department.
  • Participates in on-going management training and continuing education offered by the organization.

  • All other duties as assigned by the Patient Access Supervisor in designated area

Qualifications 

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Computer literate with proficiency in Microsoft Word & Excel
  • Excellent communication skills, Bilingual/Spanish preferred
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • 2+yrs Patient Access or Healthcare Revenue Cycle experience required
  • Knowledge of third-party payer eligibility & benefits, referral, pre-certification/authorization processes required

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to sit for long periods of time.  Must be able to work paying close attention to detail with frequent interruptions. Must be able to lift and carry up to 20 lbs. frequently and 50 lbs. occasionally.
