Job Description

The Hospital Phone Operator/Receptionist is responsible for answering a high volume of incoming phone calls for the hospital, in a friendly and professional manner.  Obtains information from caller so as to direct them to the proper extension.  Handle paging of emergency codes and announcements.  Greet and direct patients and or visitors to the appropriate departments. Collect and receipt patient payments and post patient payments.  Assist with miscellaneous clerical duties for the department as needed such as scanning, faxing, copying, or other assigned duties by the Hospital Admitting Supervisor or Patient Access Manager.  Must be able to remain calm through stressful situations and with difficult patients, providing exceptional care and service to patients, guests and fellow employees at all times. 
 
Essential Duties:
  • Greet patients and visitors in a friendly and professional manner, ascertain purpose of visit and direct to the appropriate staff or department
  • Answer a heavy volume of incoming calls in a timely fashion.
  • Triage calls
  • Obtain information from caller to direct calls to appropriate extension.
  • Make overhead pages for emergency codes and all other miscellaneous announcements in a professional manner.
  • Collect and receipt patient payments.
  • Adhere to HIPAA privacy regulations at all times
  • Communicate effectively with all co-workers in a courteous and professional manner
  • Follow all hospital policies and procedures
Other Duties:
  • Attend organizational and department meetings when indicated
  • Participate in team discussions and planning
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the Hospital Admitting Supervisor or Patient Access Manager
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Previous Phone Operator/Receptionist experience in a Clinic or Hospital setting
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Computer literate with knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word & Excel
  • Excellent customer service and communication & skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and detail oriented
  • Ability to multitask efficiently in a fast paced environment
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bilingual/Spanish
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to sit for long periods of time. Must be able to work paying close attention to detail with frequent interruptions.
Must be able to lift and carry up to 20 lbs. frequently and 50 lbs. occasionally.
