General Description
Emergency Department Clinical Supervisor (EDCS) provides oversight of the activities on the ED nursing unit and QWick Care during specific shifts with responsibility for the supervision of the patient care, personnel, and unit operations, including serving as a resource to staff, directing patient flow, assuring appropriate utilization of resources and providing oversight for the provisions of quality care in a manner satisfying to patients.
The EDCS works collaboratively with the ED Director and is responsible for the oversight of daily operations of the ED and QWick Care including off shift and weekend supervision of nursing personnel.
Essential Job Duties
Responsibilities:
- Serves as a role model, demonstrating effective patient care, leadership and professional behavior.

- Ability to demonstrate time management, organization of work and the ability to prioritize work.
- Assist with radiology studies (i.e. CTA and stress test) through the administration of medications, patient assessment, and monitoring.
- Demonstrates the ability to resolve conflicts and effective communication.
- Plans for and implements a staffing pattern that meets patient care needs and supports primary nursing with the appropriate level of experience and certifications.
- Assists in managing the ADP payroll of staff while evaluating time/ attendance and PTO.
- Assists the ED Director in evaluating staff performance, maintains direct communication with the ED Director, including following processes appropriate for counseling and progressive discipline.
- Participates in the recruitment process, including interviewing and selection of staff.
- Informs, teaches, and enforces adherence to new or revised hospital or departmental policies and procedures.
- Assists with the coordination and development of staff meetings and departmental communication.
- Facilitates the orientation of all new staff and promotes ongoing continuing education in collaboration with the Clinical Educator.
- Systematically and continuously collects and assesses data in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team to provide therapeutic care for patients.
- Time allocation may approximate to 60 percent patient care responsibilities and 40 percent leadership responsibilities, subject to change depending on department projects, patient volume and acuity.
- Rotating on-call is required, which may include either/or remote or on-site management as deemed appropriate by the ED Director.
Management of Resources:
- Monitors the effectiveness of materials, supplies, and staffing management providing input regarding budget management.
- Effective communication with ED Director for problem-solving process of departmental needs.
- Monitors and provides a safe and therapeutic environment for patients and staff.
- Participates in the development of ED goals. Identifies and resolves problems and consults with the ED Director when necessary.
- Participates with the ED Director in reviews, investigations, and follow up on patient concerns and quality calendar events and compliance.
Education and Outreach:
- Participates in maintaining a healthy work environment, evaluates barriers, and promotes educational opportunities to achieve a healthy work environment.
- Creates an environment in which intellectual curiosity is stimulated, evaluating staff’s educational needs, collaborate with the Clinical Educator, and is supportive of continued learning and empowerment.
- Participates on ED and hospital committees as indicated.
Minimum Qualifications
- Ability to work: 3 – 12 hour or 4 – 10 hour shifts.
- Availability for remote and on-call supervisory oversight
- Education: Registered Nurse
- Work Experience: Minimum: Three (3) years Critical Care, ED or Management RN experience.
- Licenses and Certifications: Registered Nurse licensed in Arizona
- Current BLS, ACLS, PALS, and TNCC. (BLS is a minimum with ACLS, PALS, and TNCC within one year of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
- Five (5) or more years of relevant experience in clinical practice. Management, Supervisory, or Charge RN experience with demonstrated success.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions
Frequent standing, stooping, bending, stretching, squatting; must be able to stand/walk for up to 70% of the work day; must be able to lift, transfer, turn and position patients weighing up to 125 lbs. unassisted, or with the assistance of one for a resident weighing over 125 lbs. May be subjected to offensive odors and combative behavior. Must be able to lift and carry up to 20 lbs. frequently and 50 lbs. occasionally. May be exposed to communicable diseases including the HIV and HBV viruses. Must be able to work paying close attention to detail with frequent interruptions.
